IN RESPONSE to the Sept. 2 letter "Socialism fails" by Ron Cecchini, I am taking up his challenge to defend the system. Socialism differs from communism in that it uses the current government to reform society and help the people. One of the best examples of socialism in American history is under FDR. Roosevelt's creation of government jobs and Social Security, among other things, helped to lift this country out of the Great Depression. Socialism gives people more will to live and carry on, even when they are going through hard times. I challenge all those who are "anti-socialist" to read more history and to see how socialism can be complementary to capitalism and really help those who suffer and struggle under the free-market economy.
