IT WAS with a great breath of relief that I read Meg Mainzer-Cohen's "Common goals for the common good in Boston." For too long, Boston's development has been hamstrung by the NIMBY set who, despite choosing to live in the downtown area of a major American metropolis, fight any and all development as "out of scale."
What makes Boston great is its livability, which results in part from its smaller size. This should not preclude it from adding tall buildings to its skyline now and again. The historic neighborhoods are beautiful, and should be preserved, but if we are to listen to the "anti-development zealots," Boston will be nothing but a museum.
