JAY MATHEWS thoroughly debunks the myth that the American educational system, and in particular engineering education, is inferior to educational systems in other countries. However, he fails to ask why this myth is so persistent. I believe there is a simple reason: It allows CEOs to argue for relaxed immigration quotas on engineers and other college graduates, thereby increasing competition, and allowing the CEOs to pay less to their employees.
