GAS TAX increase? Good idea, but let's not be naive. Will the Legislature guarantee that all gas tax receipts go to highways and roadways? Or does this become another source of revenue for general spending, and we revisit this issue in a few years when the next crisis hits?
And if we agree to fund roadways and highways with this source of revenue, why do we need tolls at all? The current selective toll system is antiquated and unfair. It should be abolished as part of this tax increase.
I agree that a gas tax is the proper mechanism. Those who use the roads the most would use more gas and pay higher taxes. But I am unconvinced that the powers in Boston wouldn't take the money now and come back for more later.
