YOUR ARTICLE about fake grass on playing fields could not have come at a better time. Boston College has such a plan for artificial turf on some of the athletic fields on what is now the Brighton campus. Those of us who have attended the meetings regarding Boston College's master plan have been vocal in asking BC to leave all the playing fields as natural turf. We are not satisfied that artificial turf is safe for either the athletes or the environment. Can anything "constructed of plastic and simulated dirt made of discarded old tires (as many as 10,000 in a single field)" be good for the environment?

Neighbors of the school and the Brighton Task Force have asked BC serious questions that have gone unanswered. In light of the marshy qualities of those fields, and the underground streams, the potential for leaching into surrounding properties and Chandler Pond is significant and a danger to the entire community.
