THE STORY "Architect sends check for $15K to keep Zakim lit" (Metro, April 14) ran under the main headline " 'It's all about money.' " Evidently it is, as usual, with no apparent thought to the environmental consequences of the power consumption required to light the Zakim Bridge. Ironically, Massachusetts Turnpike Authority executive director Alan LeBovidge is quoted pining for "a sustainable solution" - referring to funding.
A decision on illumination should be based on considerations of environmental sustainability alone. Greenhouse gases, climate change, and light pollution are serious issues. The bridge should be illuminated for holidays and special events. The rarity of the spectacle would give it added meaning, drastically reduce harmful effects, and save cost.
The architect's proposed contribution, while generous, is misguided.
