I HAVE been reading about the Easter backups on the Mass. Pike for several days. I am a bit irritated at the public on this one. This is just another example where the public is getting what it paid for.
Years ago, our elected leaders determined that to avoid raising taxes, it would be a good idea to put a great burden of the Big Dig onto the turnpike toll payers. We (since we elected them) also decided to borrow a great deal of money for other projects so that we would not have to raise taxes to pay for those projects.
What you saw Sunday is the result of that short-sighted, irresponsible policy decision. We are overburdened with debt.
If we, the taxpayers, are unwilling to pay for the services we want, we will get the services we are willing to pay for.
At this point, the only solution is to either raise taxes or provide fewer services. There's no more wiggle room.
