I READ Kevin Cullen's May 7 Metro column "Bottom Line? It's a business" while hopping onto Boston.com to check the weather for last night's Red Sox game. I saw that Manny Ramírez was accused of using a performance-enhancing drug. Then I clicked on Cullen's column, because I have been reading him since the mid-1980s when print ruled and Cullen's words captured a Boston flavor you couldn't get anywhere else.

It struck me as a bargain that I could: check the weather, learn about Manny's latest drama (with a link to the original Los Angeles Times story), and read the Cullen column - all for free. (Some habits never die: I printed out the column.)

If my cellphone company can extract the better part of 100 bucks a month from me, and my cable company can charge me $150 for more than 200 channels of mostly blather, surely the Globe can bill me $10 a month for unlimited access to Boston.com.

Memo to the New York Times Co.: What are you waiting for?

I HAVE bought my last Boston Globe. It is unfortunate, because I really did enjoy reading the daily Globe, but I cannot justify the price increase. I could handle the increase from 75 cents to a dollar, but, since the Globe no longer considers where I live to be part of the "Metro Boston" area, there is an additional charge of 50 cents. And $1.50 a day is just too much.

I do not enjoy reading anything of any length, including but not limited to the Globe, on the Internet. So unless I move to a so-called metropolitan area (which I do not foresee), this is goodbye.

Good luck to you folks at the Globe with your negotiations. Thanks for the memories.
