ONE HAS to admire Jeff Jacoby's earnestness ("Courage, or the lack of it," Op-ed, May 3) in finding in Carrie Prejean a new poster child for hetero-marriage, but to suggest that Miss California is a profile in courage is a long stretch at the very least. Responding, as she did, to an insipid blogger, Perez Hilton, with an opinion about same-sex marriage that is fairly mainstream does not a heroine make. Also, is the integrity of her position undermined a bit by the fact that she had breast implants at the expense of the Miss America pageant, or has appeared in revealing photos that now threaten her crown?

For these so-called news items, I could not care less. But, please spare us the sanctimony. Beauty pageants do more to undermine our values about human worth than gay marriage ever could or will. Would that Prejean had strutted less-endowed and had voiced an opinion on the meaninglessness of the pageant. Now that would have taken courage.
