RE "TROLLEY safety system put off" (Page A1, May 25): It's true that enhanced safety devices would have prevented two of the serious Green Line crashes this past year. But both crashes were caused by negligent and inattentive conductors. A better investment would be cameras in the cars to keep watch of drivers, and the immediate firing of drivers who violate safety policies. Oh, and a statute holding all transit drivers criminally responsible for certain negligent acts, including being under the influence and using cellphones or other such devices. This would show drivers and conductors that the public is serious.
A customer complaint and a review of the video footage would show the infraction, and the termination would be immediate, along with loss of benefits, pensions, etc.
If the union doesn't like it, tough. I don't like feeling that, after I pay my fare, I should worry that the driver is playing fast and loose with my safety. If you want me to use public transportation, then make it safe.
Both crashes were preventable. Paying attention costs nothing.
