IT IS an interesting coincidence that in the June 9 edition of the Globe, on adjacent pages, the problems of elderly drivers and public transportation are being discussed ("Accidents accelerate with age," Editorial; "Why we need to save the T from ruin," Op-ed).

Indeed, they are closely related: If elderly people (and anyone else) had a choice of using convenient, reliable, responsible, and affordable public transportation similar to systems in use in most of the civilized world, then accidents involving elderly drivers would not be as great an issue.

As a US citizen originating from a European country, I must acknowledge that the most difficult thing to adjust to after a European holiday or business trip is not the time difference. It's the transportation nostalgia.
