WHILE IT makes perfect sense to me to require older (or even all) drivers to be tested more frequently, my recent experience at the Registry of Motor Vehicles underlines how important it is to carry out this testing correctly.

I was waiting in the front row to renew my license. An elderly woman sat next to me. Her number was called, repeatedly, but she was unable to hear. The people around her pointed out that it was her turn.

Then she was asked to take the vision test. She was unable to figure out where to look and, once she was using the machine correctly, she stated repeatedly that she could not see the letters. So, what did the tester do? He told her to just sit down, and he'd take her photo.

And, to the shock of all who were watching, she received a new license, despite not being able to hear or see properly.

The thought of this woman being on the road is scary. I hope legislators will move to protect both older drivers and those they may injure.
