ALEX BEAM (“Invasion of the celebrities,’’ g, June 26) is right on the money about celebrities in Boston in the olden days. I remember when President Nixon’s daughter used to walk around Harvard Square without being recognized, and Caroline Kennedy had to wait at the back of the line at the Coop. We didn’t have celebrities, in the sense that the academe would recognize anyone from popular culture. If you had a TV, it was a 10-inch black-and-white that you kept in the closet except for invasions of Cuba. Parking in the square cost a nickel then.
