SCOT LEHIGH argues that the TV networks are covering the death of Michael Jackson despite the fact that few people care about it (“Enough already on Michael Jackson!’’ Op-ed, July 1). “I don’t hear Jackson talked about as much as I hear the obsessive coverage of his death decried,’’ he writes.
However, someone has to be interested in this coverage. The news media are businesses and they provide what their customers want. And in this age of technology, it is easy to monitor what people are reading and watching. The endless Jackson coverage is not solely the fault of the media.
The Michael Jackson death saga does not appeal to me, so I choose not to consume it. However, I cannot get upset that a business is providing a service that people want. If enough people stop caring, the media will cover a different story.
