RE “NO climate debate? Yes, there is’’ (Op-ed, July 1) by Jeff Jacoby: The climate debate has been “more robust than it has been in years,’’ but the debate isn’t over whether humans are affecting our climate. That debate was over decades ago. The debate now is how and when are we going to join the international community in acting to check global warming?
Jacoby cites the same old skeptics, who use the same tired pseudo-science to make claims like: We exhale carbon dioxide, so it can’t be a pollutant (Will Happer).
The bottom line is, the sort of actions needed to reduce carbon emissions are also the actions that save money, create new jobs, boost the economy, improve human health, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and make us internationally competitive. And no, they won’t bankrupt us all (see the recent Congressional Budget Office report on the costs of the House bill).
So let’s get back to the real debate: How and when will our leaders act to make the United States a leader in climate policy?
