VOTER PARTICIPATION is key to a healthy democracy, but Mayor Menino doesn’t care how many people participate as long as they vote for him (“Don’t duck debates,’’ Editorial, July 2).

The more the public is educated through public forums and debates, the more they turn out on election day. Menino’s unwillingness to commit to debates is just another form of voter suppression.

For the first time in years, we have several viable candidates for mayor, which is good for our city. They should debate as early, as often, and in as many neighborhoods as possible -with or without Menino.
