SOMETIMES COMPASSION in public safety is highly visible and becomes a heartwarming human interest story. Most of the time, compassion routinely delivered in the streets is simply lost in the noise of life.
“Neediness, compassion on police station steps’’ (Page A1, July 2), Milton J. Valencia’s story of a homeless woman who makes the A-1 police station her home, provides a window into the makeup of every cop, EMT professional, and firefighter I’ve ever known.
At a time when most writers choose to focus on what’s wrong with public institutions, it’s refreshing to read a story that reminds us of the fundamental goodness of those who pick up the pieces when society’s systems fail us.
