AS BOTH a former Bay Stater and a cyclist who was recently injured in an accident on a treacherous stretch of pavement in Oakland, Calif., I applaud the city of Boston’s introduction of an iPhone app for municipal complaints (Page A1, July 6).

Since my accident, I have developed a heightened awareness of potholes and other road hazards. Whenever I go out, I see too many hazards to remember for reporting after I get back home. With the iPhone app, the city allows for the reporting of road hazards on the spot. If the city follows through and fixes the potholes, this has the potential to keep cars out of the repair shop and cyclists out of the emergency room.

Steep as the $25,000 price tag to the city may seem, those are benefits that even non-iPhone users like me can appreciate.
