JEFF JACOBY (Op-ed, Sept. 30) suggests that it is somehow unfair that public sector workers have job security, pensions, and an average annual salary of $79,197. Up until the 1980s, my father, who worked in the private sector, enjoyed job longevity, health care insurance, and pension benefits. His job is now held by per-diem “independent consultants’’ who sit at the same desk, but have no health care insurance, vacation time, or pensions.

The private sector shipped manufacturing oversees, and outsourced their staff like Hyatt’s housekeepers. Jacoby pretends that public workers made this happen. Ignore his noise. Remember that all workers, both private and public, should have fair wages, workplace safety, and job security.
