THE GLOBE’S Oct. 16 editorial “Don’t water down climate bill’’ couldn’t be more timely. This week scientists predicted that the Arctic will have ice-free summers in a decade.
As the Globe notes, the Boxer-Kerry bill is already not perfect and the scramble for 60 votes in the Senate will require political compromises. Senator John F. Kerry recently announced bipartisan support for action on climate with his colleague Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina. Unfortunately, this duo of powerful senators touted more nukes, more offshore oil drilling, and the increases in so-called “clean coal’’ on our way to passing climate legislation.
Kerry deserves our praise. However, in the effort to win support from recalcitrant senators he should remember that we in Massachusetts are squarely opposed to more nuclear power; we don’t want oil rigs off Georges Bank or the rest of the coast; and we have made a commitment to using less coal, not more.
