JEFF JACOBY is on to something by pointing out that moderator Peter Meade was the most senatorial on the stage during the Senate debate Monday (“All four candidates are out of touch,’’ Op-ed, Oct. 27). Meade clearly won the debate by pressing the candidates on the issues, and attempting, albeit unsuccessfully, to get them to actually answer the questions.

If an actual candidate had to win, it would have been Representative Michael Capuano. That is, until Meade directly challenged him to answer the specific and legitimate question of whether illegal immigrants should be given driver’s licenses and health coverage. Capuano held firm on his nonanswer by saying that such a question is a false choice and would not come up. If the issue of health coverage for illegal immigrants was already raised during health care reform, why would it not come up during immigration reform?
