I AM happy to see that the four most recent Republican governors are gathering to raise some money for the GOP and discuss issues facing America (“Ex-governors gather for GOP fund-raiser,’’ New England in brief, Metro, Oct. 26). Of the four former governors, only Jane Swift finished her term of office. William Weld sought escape from the rigors of the State House as ambassador to Mexico (thwarted by Jesse Helms); Paul Cellucci bailed to become ambassador to Canada, and Mitt Romney effectively quit governing the state halfway through his term to campaign across the country for the Republican nomination for president.
One can only hope that the commitment of Weld, Cellucci, and Romney to the national interest is deeper than the one they exhibited to the voters of Massachusetts.
