REGARDING NEAL Gabler’s Oct. 31 op-ed on economic sociopaths: We have met the sociopaths, and they are us. It would be nice to think that it is just the bad eggs, the Madoffs and the Wall Street gougers, who are pathological. But they couldn’t do it without our help. Every one of us who has money invested through retirement accounts or in any other way is participating in a pathological system that allows us to care about how much money our investments are making without taking any responsibility for how it is made.
Most of us do not even know which companies our money is invested in, much less whether those companies are acting honorably or decently. Many of us undoubtedly have money invested in the very companies that are now charging us usurious rates on our credit cards. We can limit bonuses, but can we accomplish any lasting reform without requiring each of us to take responsibility for what our money is doing?
