THE CURRENT economic situation is not one that will be solved easily or quickly, and I agree with your assertion, in the editorial “Patrick should cut local aid, ease up on human services,’’ that the burden should be shared. Deep cuts in human services will undoubtedly lead to increased costs elsewhere, as those who depend on the care and support provided by our state human service agencies find themselves without the help they need. I applaud your assertion that this vulnerable population be spared the most severe cuts.

However, I take issue with your claim that the state can save money by demanding $35 million in concessions from state employee unions. Members of these unions work in human services, providing the care and support for those in need. To best decide where sacrifices should be made, all those affected and involved should be at the table.
