I RECENTLY spent 18 months working in Southeast Asia, and was pleased to witness a growing awareness there about energy consumption and the enviroment.
Upon my return home, I was disappointed to see that here it’s business as usual. People generally don’t seem to take simple steps to reduce their energy consumption, even in supposedly progressive Boston.
Look at the cash-strapped Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. My commute takes me from the Braintree station into town. At the Wollaston, North Quincy, and JFK-UMass stations and at waiting areas elsewhere on the MBTA, I see countless fluorescent light bulbs blazing away - all day, every day, rain or shine.
I happen to know that the people who staff these stations are well compensated. In these days of tight budgets and environmental awareness, shouldn’t these T employees be able to, and required to, find the light switch?
