RE: “TELEVISION: Two standards, or too racy?” (editorial, Nov. 24): I agree that the right to simulate sex on TV is not the most pressing cause for gay Americans at the moment; however, it is the concept behind it that is, indeed, a pressing issue.

There most certainly is a double standard today, not only in the media, but in society as a whole. Adam Lambert argues that the double standard is between genders; I believe that it is among all performers. Females have not been the only artists over the years to give risqué performances. We must also take into account the sexual routines carried out by David Bowie, Justin Timberlake, and even the king, Elvis Presley, himself. These acts were also done for “shock value,’’ but no one ever gave them too much grief about it, nor did they edit anything out.

The fact that an openly gay man gave that performance is what caused the uproar at the American Music Awards, not the actions themselves. And so, even though there is definitely beauty in restraint, such restraint should be asked of all performers, not just the homosexual ones.
