WENDELL EDMONDS’S suggestion that people using foul language on the MBTA be fined is just what we don’t need - language police (“Keep the T clean of foul language,’’ Letters, Dec. 11). Sure, public swearing can be obnoxious, but fining the perpetrators would bump up against the First Amendment and send us yet farther down the road to a police state.

I find the constant recorded T announcements, such as to report suspicious behavior and not to evade fares, to be far more annoying than any swearing I have heard in my 31 years of riding the rails. This din of useless, paranoia-inducing announcements is ineffective, and only serves to add to the ambient noise we commuters must suffer through daily. Makes me want to swear a blue streak every time I hear one of these announcements.
