Merit pay forgets some factors

NOT IN a derivative moment does one math teacher deserve all the credit for one student’s Advanced Placement test success. If the student is in his or her junior year then that student has had at least 10 teachers of mathematics over the years. These teachers provided the skills necessary for the student to be able to take the AP class and receive a passing or better score on the test. The same is true for any AP exam, be it science, English, any of the social sciences, art, art history, etc.

This does not take into account the education of the whole child, which was paramount before our schools were forced to teach to the tests. The inspiration, cross training, and love of learning that comes from other teachers should be factored into this pay-by-number scheme.

There are too many inequities in this proposal to become a permanent provision.
