REGARDING YOUR front-page March 10 story “A rite that’s passing,’’ about the low attendance at confessions. I have a suggestion that could increase it: Allow non-Catholics to go, which reminds me of a classic joke:

A 95-year-old man is at confession, and tells the priest: “Father, I’m going out with a beautiful 22-year-old woman and we’re getting married next week, and the rabbi — ’’

“Wait a minute, the rabbi? You’re Jewish? Why are you telling me this?’’

“Father, I’m telling everybody.’’
