THE APRIL 29 editorial “To restore ROTC, end gay ban’’ urges that ROTC training on elite campuses be held hostage to congressional reversal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell’’ policy. This policy was instituted in 1993 by a Democratically controlled Congress and supported by President Clinton. The universities should refuse to allow the political leaders who created this policy on campus, not the military that is subservient to the political process.
The perpetuators of this policy have been honored on these campuses numerous times, while students who want to serve the country must travel off campus for legitimate training without receiving credit. How many honorary degrees have these universities awarded over the years to Bill Clinton and the senators and representatives who voted in “don’t ask, don’t tell’’? Ban the politicians, not the military!
