AS A lawyer, I can’t predict what kind of Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan might be, but as a longtime softball player, I would say her batting stance (as shown on the May 16 op-ed page) hints at a balanced approach to the law. She doesn’t put more weight right or left, and keeps her front shoulder tucked in and her hands back so as not to lunge at balls. Choking up on the bat indicates aiming at making solid contact, not swinging wildly at bad pitches out of the strike zone. I would say to the Senate: Play ball!
