IN RESPONSE to the article “Obama’s aunt won rare ruling: Judge who reopened asylum case has history of refusals’’ (Metro, May 19), I understand many opinions may be taken. However, to me, it seems rather unjust that a person who had already applied once for asylum, unsuccessfully, should have it granted when hundreds of others in her position were denied. It seems very likely that it was Zeituni Onyango’s relation to President Obama that resulted in her being granted asylum.
Before Obama was a prominent figure, she applied and was ordered deported to Kenya. Now that he is in office, she is allowed to stay in the country. Even though the president tried to remain uninvolved, he does have influence.
Others may disagree, but I feel the only reason she is allowed to stay is that she has a famous nephew.
