RE “HEALTH care cost is back on table’’ (Metro, June 28): It is interesting to view this article with the letter from Boston City Councilor John Connolly, “Autism coverage’’ (letters, June 28). The common thread in both pieces is the Legislature.

We read that “the Legislature may enact a law designed to curb rising health costs,’’ while at the same time the Legislature is considering requiring insurers to provide coverage for screening and treating autism spectrum disorders.

Connolly says that “Massachusetts would be able to save about $7 million in early intervention costs, should insurance companies be required to expand their coverage.’’ What this means is that Massachusetts residents’ health insurance costs would rise by about $7 million. Many people complain about insurance companies making health care decisions, yet they accept the Legislature doing so.

Reading Globe articles has led me to believe that anyone with a hangnail can get the Legislature to require lifetime medical coverage, and probably a disability pension, too. We cannot have it both ways: cost and coverage go in the same direction. As Walt Kelly first said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.’’
