REGARDING ERIC Moskowitz’s story about the state transportation department’s Grand Junction line (“Signals crossed on Worcester link: Cambridge gets belated heads-up on Murray’s North Station plan,’’ Metro, Aug. 9): Thanks for highlighting Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray’s leadership on one of our most important transportation initiatives — leadership that has permitted us to close the CSX deal after others failed. Ownership of the Grand Junction line, as the article notes, offers strategic advantage to us as we work to balance transportation options for our customers through more and better rail service.

The story could have left the mistaken impression that improvements to the line — which runs from Allston to Chelsea, crossing the Charles River below the BU Bridge — are not a priority. They are. So is the coordination with the City of Cambridge and local residents and businesses. Indeed, some of the quotes were taken from an Urban Ring Citizens Advisory Committee meeting where we were performing outreach to important stakeholders. Most important, the lieutenant governor has put a creative idea on the table that, in the relative short term, could relieve pressure on South Station, which is at capacity now.
