ONLINE COMMENTS in response to the Globe’s Sept. 23 front-page article “Harvard links ROTC return to end of ‘don’t ask’ ’’ imply that “elitist’’ Harvard is out of step with public opinion on this issue. But these people are just plain wrong.

In fact, about 78 percent of the American public favors repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell,’’ including 64 percent of all Republicans, according to numerous polls. Among those favoring repeal is Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

So it is the “elitist’’ Senate that is ignoring the will of the people on this one.
