CARING CITIZENS should vote yes on Question 2 to repeal Chapter 40B. Caring citizens need to know that under 40B development, only 25 percent of the units have to be affordable, and “affordable’’ means sold to households below 80 percent of median income.

Despite this, using the current 40B law, developers are able to derail town boards from the ability to apply important citizen-created zoning bylaws.

In an ad asking people to vote no on Question 2, a family is pictured in the front yard of their “affordable’’ home.

I can’t help but think that truth in advertising would require the camera to pan out a few hundred feet to reveal the remaining 75 percent of homes in the massive development adjacent to the “affordable’’ unit. Panning out would reveal the destruction to the surrounding landscape and historic neighborhood feel. It would show new traffic, new buildings, and dramatic loss of open space. A full picture would reveal that because residents vote on town bylaws, and because developers use 40B to sidestep bylaws, 40B takes away residents’ desires and rights.

The caring citizen, aware of the whole picture, would vote yes on Question 2.
