IN HER Nov. 20 op-ed “Much ado about earmarks’’ Renée Loth declares that the proposed moratorium on congressional earmarks is a “sideshow,’’ and backs her assertion by saying that earmarks “represent less than 1 percent of the budget over which Congress has control.’’ This is exactly the kind of thinking that has led to the mess we have today.

Until politicians, journalists, and the voters stop thinking that $35 billion a year in earmarks represents pocket change, we will continue down the road to fiscal ruin.
