BELIEFS THAT SPURRED THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
IS JEFF Jacoby serious? Is he actually suggesting theocratic roots for the United States (“Philosophy, faith and the Fourth of July,’’ Op-ed, July 3)? He does so by clever allusion to Calvin Coolidge and the Declaration - ignoring the inconvenient truth that the framers of the Constitution, some of whom notably authored the Declaration without Coolidge’s help, carefully avoided any use of or allusion to God in the Constitution until they date the document. And then there’s that pesky First Amendment.
