I FIND it shocking that producer David Mugar would defend the alterations to the Fourth of July fireworks on the CBS national broadcast with the excuse that the show was entertainment and not news (“Boston gets a nonreality show; CBS broadcasts impossible views of 4th fireworks,’’ Page A1, July 8). Regardless of the intent of the programming, live television should be presented without alteration. Mugar stated he is proud of the city and he wanted to show off some of Boston’s historic sites, but there are other ways to do that. Patriots broadcasts routinely show pictures of Boston as they cut away to commercial, but I would hope that even Mugar would find it unacceptable to place Paul Revere’s statue on the sidelines next to Tom Brady. It is unfortunate that just because it could, CBS altered these images. It brings into question the network’s credibility and ethics when covering a live event.
