I APPRECIATED the Sept. 5 front-page article “Budgets cut, teachers dig deeper for supplies’’ after spending the weekend stocking up at Staples and A.C. Moore.

My wife and I are both teachers and are well aware of the need to chip in if we want our classrooms to be organized and function smoothly.

Although there is no immediate answer to the problem of educators having to provide for their students, there is one way in which our country could show its appreciation. Raise the teaching supplies tax deduction from $250 to $500.

As your article pointed out, many teachers are spending a few hundred dollars in September.

Don’t forget that they are spending more throughout the year as those supplies run out.
