IN RESPONSE to Robert L. Reynolds Sept. 14 op-ed on jobs, I would like to put forth a different perspective. I am a small-business owner, and I resent the idea that we need to continue to give large corporations more advantages in the marketplace. If anything, we need to close the loopholes that already give large corporations the upper hand.
As for job creation, not all jobs are equal. The jobs created by Reynolds’s plan might not be the type that could support livable, socially just wages. Instead, they could drive down wages overall, and continue to increase the challenges that small businesses face.
I may employ only 10 people, but they are 10 people who make livable wages with good benefits, and who pay their share of taxes just as I do. It is time to make large corporations pay their share too, and for us to instead focus on how to help small businesses expand with good jobs at good wages. Rather than seeing our money go offshore, perhaps we need to help those who are keeping the money onshore.
