A hint of red in blueprint for Obama reelection

I DISAGREE with Peter S. Canellos’ thesis in his Oct. 8 op-ed piece (“From Patrick, a blueprint for Obama’’), that Obama needs mainly to defend his record in order to duplicate Deval Patrick’s reelection win and take the 2012 presidential election. It certainly helped Patrick in 2010 to have a hapless third party candidate, Tim Cahill, in the race. In fact, had that not happened, a large portion of Cahill’s 8 percent showing added to Baker’s 42 percent of the vote would have resulted in the defeat of Patrick.

What Obama needs is to have one of the eight Republican primary contenders become so disenchanted that he or she chooses to run as an independent. Emulating Patrick in that fashion may be the only way that Obama will become a two-term president, because his record is one of economic and foreign policy failure.
