NO ONE appreciated Barack Obama's North Carolina primary victory as did supporter Harvey Gantt. The election not only speeded Obama toward the Democratic presidential nomination, it was proof to Gantt that the ballot box is nowhere as haunted by the white fear that destroyed his 1990 and 1996 Senate races against Jesse Helms.
