Propose yanking 30,000 young men and women out of their lives, their college studies, and their good jobs and social bliss. To get 30,000 manageable soldiers, a much larger pool would have to be called. The purpose of the war would be quickly reevaluated and, at least by Jimmy Breslin's logic, abandoned.
