This is the state of the abortion debate in Mississippi, and possibly beyond: laws and lives could turn, not on the nuances of responsible family planning, but on whose slogan represents the most dire situation. Today, Mississippi voters could well pass a referendum that would confer the full rights of a human on every fertilized egg, an attractive idea for those who would reduce the abortion debate to a single nugget of ideological purity. And for those who see abortion in shades of grey? They’ve been left to stoke the panic over unintended consequences.
