For the media, a failure by the supercommittee is an easy story to tell, with clearly labeled heroes and villains and an outcome that neatly fits the ‘Washington is broken’ narrative. And there is lots of blame to go around - most of it misdirected. For all the talk of Republican intransigence on revenues, the supercommittee ran into trouble because Democrats won’t engage realistically on tax reform - the most sensible way of getting new revenue into the mix.
