Every year, hundreds of tons of unexploded ordnance from World War II are discovered in Germany, a reminder of the war’s unprecedented and still unmatched violence. Less literal consequences of the war remain buried in the human unconscious. The Nazi project of setting out to eliminate every Jew on earth remains morally unique, even within the context of the 20th century’s vast orgy of killing.
