They say you never forget your first kiss, but I have fonder - and more enduring - memories of my first vote. It was thrilling to feel the power and mystery inside the booth with the blue curtain, and I was hooked on a civic habit I’ve practiced steadily for decades. But what if that first voting experience is marred by onerous paperwork requirements, imposed by imperious officials intent on discovering fraud? This is the prospect facing first-time voters in more than 30 states that have passed, or are considering, new restrictions affecting students.
