Eco-friendly fashions are looking less hippie, more hip.

Kermit was right. It's not easy being green, especially when it comes to your wardrobe. But it is getting easier. No longer limited to folksy "Save the Planet" organic T's, environmentally friendly fashions have really grown up. Soy, hemp, and bamboo are being woven into soft, elegant knits. Chemical-free materials are turning up in Sex and the City-worthy shoes. And jewelry handcrafted from dried seeds and plant dyes is cultivating quite a following. Trendy eco-maniacs have been excited by Anya Hindmarch's "I'm not a plastic bag" canvas tote and the cool and socially conscious Edun label (it's "nude," spelled backward) from Bono, his wife, and edgy designer Rogan Gregory. Even status lines are offering eco-chic items, like Karl Lagerfeld's all-natural, non-dyed wool dresses for Chanel and Giorgio Armani's hemp men's suits and jeans. Then there's Stella McCartney, a lifelong vegetarian, who feels high style should be highly responsible. McCartney uses recycled plastics to make her coveted bags and shoes. Some of the most forward looks today are recycled from the past, such as vintage clothing or jewelry made from discarded road signs. Still have to have a designer bag? Buy it gently worn at a consignment shop, rent it for the month, or trade with a friend. Then enjoy the green peace of mind.
