TALES FROM THE CITY

In a Jam

January 13, 2008

During the big snowstorm last month, I was at the rest stop off the Mass. Pike between Framingham and Natick after a four-hour drive from Boston. As I was walking back to the crowded lot, I realized I'd lost my car keys. I ran back to the bathroom and looked. I then raced to my car and peered inside. No keys. Panicking, I retraced my steps in the accumulating snow. I spotted a state trooper and asked if anyone had found any car keys. "Subaru?" he asked and pulled them from his pocket. Surprising even myself, I threw my arms around him in a heartfelt holiday hug. It took me another hour to get home, but I smiled the whole time.

Muscle and Heart

While trying to get into a Wellesley rest area on Route 128 South during the storm, I realized many cars in front of me had gotten stuck attempting to make it up the hill of the exit ramp. Out of nowhere came an angel from Rhode Island. He wanted nothing in return and pushed close to 50 or more cars out of a tight spot. If not for that young man, many of us might still be on the road.
